Dear Fairmont Community,
It is hard to believe that we are already seven weeks into the school year. As autumn begins we are maintaining our focus on increasing the reading proficiency of our students. Teachers have completed reading assessments and are using that information to meet your child’s reading needs. You will have a chance to talk about your child’s status and progress at the upcoming parent teacher conferences being held the week of the 22nd. Look for conference scheduling information to come home from your child’s teacher.
At our last parent coffee we shared information about our School Performance Rating for this year. We remain an “approaching expectations” or yellow rated school as we were last year. We are hopeful that the efforts that we are making this year and the programing changes coming next year that we will be able to move with our rating. We also shared some difficult news about our budget that ended with a silver lining. Because of a decrease in our student population this year we had to return approximately $120,000 dollars to the district. However, the staff worked hard on the budget at the beginning of the year so we didn’t have to make any reductions in our current staff for the remainder of the year.
We also discussed bad weather day procedures for students, staff and parents. On mornings when the temperature is below 32 degrees or when it is raining or snowing we will have different procedures in place. On these mornings, all students will come inside. After breakfast, kindergarten – 4th grade students will go to the auditorium and 5th – 8th grade students will go to the gym. Also, additional doors will be open for parents and students to enter the building (see map). In addition to the current door off the playground we will open the East door by the parking lot, the main office doors, and the West door of the cafeteria. I have also requested that the bus loading signs be removed on Fox street so parents can park adjacent to the school.
There will be a series of open house sessions to learn about DCIS at Fairmont which will be opening in August 2013. Anne Jacobs will be hosting these sessions beginning on November 1st at 6:30 in the auditorium. Look for the DCIS flyer in Thursday folders.
