Our Dual Language Program
Dual Language is a form of bilingual education where two groups of
students come together in the same classroom in order to enhance their
learning experience. Spanish-speaking children learn English and
English-speaking children learn Spanish. Both groups of students
learn from one another. Our goal is to teach the value of being bilingual and of being part of two cultures to all of the students at Fairmont.
Our Dual Language program at Fairmont is based on these fundamental concepts: - Being bilingual and bicultural is something to be valued. - Children learn a great deal from one
another; Each group of students can be valuable models for the
other group. - That which is learned in one language can be transferred to another language.
- It takes between 5 and 7 years to be bilingual. - During the first years of the program,
children will receive math, reading and writing instruction in their
native language, and other subjects in their second language.
Fairmont began its Dual Language program
during the 2003-2004 school year at the Kindergarten and ECE grade
levels. Each year, another grade level will be added
successively. In addition to the Dual Language classes, regular
DPS curriculum is taught at the other grade levels at Fairmont.
